During previous workshops we could find out something more about the sound. Of course everybody wants to make it nice and clear, without any undesirable noises in the background. But, as it occurred, it’s not always that easy.
First thing – the boom microphone. It was definitely heavier then I’ve expected, but when you know the technique, you can hold it for a long time. Everything is important: the location, the way you hold the microphone, the angle. That’s why it’s the best if the camera man doesn’t take care of sound at the same time – it’s too much for one person to focus on.
We were supposed to do our own scene using boom mike. With friends from the group we thought that we chose the perfect location, but of course it wasn’t that good. The narrow corridor made an horrible echo. But at least we didn’t put the mike in the frame (also common mistake).
At the end of the session we learned how to use the small, wireless microphones. It is really good to know where to put them and how to do this. Sometimes, if the mike is covered with a piece of t-shirt or scarf you can’t really hear the voice clearly.
And the task: interview. In groups of four we had to prepare two short interviews. We had to use different microphones: the boom mike and the wireless one.
We decided to do our interviews on Thursday after classes. Unfortunately one of our friends was sick, but we managed to do this in smaller group.
We chose the very nice location – it was the place in Grove building on the second floor, with big sofas. There was a big group of people and at the beginning we were afraid that it might be too loud, but microphones did their job. We didn’t make very big preparation with unusual questions. I used to work as a radio reporter in Poland and one of the first things they thought me was to make an interview look like it is a normal conversation. I remember how stressful it was sometimes. Of course, everything is simple when the person wants to talk to you. The problem is that not everybody actually wants to. Sometimes they just have to and they’re angry, because they answer same questions all the time. I had a few difficult situations like this. Anyway, our interview was simple and nice, it’s always easier to work with people who are eager to do something. We will see the results soon.
Thursday was all about team working. Firstly we were surprised with the task: we’re a film producers, there are people from our film crew trapped in the cave, there is a lot of water down there and we have to decide who is going out first and who is staying. So basically, we have to choose who will stay alive. We could discuss this in the group, but neither one of our decisions was good. All lives are equal and no one has a right to decide who is “better” and who deserves to survive. But of course you never know what kind of situations you’ll face in your live. We were trying to find a criteria (like the gender, the family, etc.), but anyway I couldn’t say that our choice was right. It just let me think how many unpredictable and stressful situations you can face in your future job. Sometimes you just have to made a tough decision, even if you’re not happy with this.
After that we had another task. For the first time we’ve been working in bigger groups (of 7 people). We were suppose to prepare everything for making two scenes. We had to share our responsibilities, choose director, producer, people responsible for sound and light, etc. I have already heard during classes that PREPARATION is one of the most important part of work. And then we could actually see this. We had around 90minutes for pre-production of two scenes and, although we did manage to do this well, we could still do this better. It was a very good lesson. I noticed that working with the bigger group has not only pluses, but also a few disadvantages. The big advantage is that there are people with different responsibilities, so you don’t have to worry about everything. But on the other hand, there are also more ideas, mistakes and it’s more difficult to keep work well-organized. It showed how important it is too go and check the location and prepare everything BEFORE you actually start working there. It also proves that it’s quite important to do your things and your job. It’s great that everybody’s got so many ideas, but actually too many can cause a big mess. So it’s good to have a decisive director and producer who have precise concept and who know what they want to do.
