This week we had a brainstorming workshop.
We’ve been talking about everything what we should prepare before starting filming. It’s great when you have an idea for the movie. But it’s not everything. You can have the best script ever or a lot of money and still create a complete disaster.
What you have to do is developing your idea. You have to plan everything, have a proper schedule, synopsis, organize the crew and the cast, think about the form of your movie, locations and many, many more. Brainstorming it’s very useful for that. Why? In Poland we’ve got the good proverb for that: “Co dwie glowy to nie jedna”, which means pretty much the same as “Two heads are better than one”. And this is the true. We can always forget about something, or consider that it’s not important when it actually is. And someone elese can help us with his/her ideas. That’s why it’s good to discuss with others. I used to make a map of thoughts and I find it also very useful. When you’ve got it on paper you see more solutions and have more thoughts about one issue.
After discussing this subject we’ve been watching scenes from our next Assignment. This time it was a Scene recreation.
For this one we had a lot of time, 3 weeks. But also many problems.
There were suppose to be 4 people in our group, but one of the girls didn’t work with us at all. She didn’t reply when we were trying to contact her for 2 weeks, so we’ve decided to work without her. So there were only 3 of us (me, Kacper and Jessica)
The firs thing was to find a scene. When I read our task I thought that it’s fantastic. I had many scenes in my head that I would love to recreate. But of course when it comes to filming it’s not that easy. There were many people working on this, they had a lot of money and we’re only a group of 3 students. So we had to come down to earth and look for something easy.
After two weeks we presented our idea: scene from one of my favourite movie “Close” by Mike Nichols. We thought that it would be perfect, because we can use the same location (near the river Thames) and the same or very similar props. But we didn’t think about things like e.g. filming in a public space, random people arounds us, problems with sound (it’s close to the river so it could be very windy there). After discussing it we had to many doubts and we’ve decided to change the scene.
Unfortunately I couldn’t find this scene on youtube. Instead of that I will post it one of the most beautiful song. It comes from this movie.
Damien Rice – “The Blower’s Daughter”
Our next idea was the scene from another lovely movie, “Garden State”.
We found the location in the library (stairs looked pretty much the same) and prepared. A friend helped us with the sounds. And then we tried to film it. Yes, tried, because even if we met quite late, there were still many people going up and down, opening and closing the doors, etc. Our clothes were also much different. And we were not happy with this at all.
So we’ve decided to choose something different. Again.
Our final decision was the scene from the movie “Me and you and everyone we know”. I saw this a few years ago, but I really liked it. I reminded myself one scene from it and we thought that it’s good (and simple) enough.
Unfortunatelly there was only 1 day left. That day Kacper was working so there was only me and Jessica left. I know we could make it a lot better. But I think that for a such a short time and small crew we’ve managed quite well. We didn’t take care of lights, because we didn’t have anyone to do this. But we prepared props, clothes (and believe me, it wasn’t easy in that time), music, found similar locations and even destroyed a few magazines so we could use pictures from them instead of the real pictures. Anyway, I know it’s not good, but it’s also not that bad. I am still glad that we’ve done it, because we had many bad moments with this project.
